Does contemporary cognitive psychology favor or oppose psychoanalytic theory?

Comments on S. Epstein's theory of the integration of the cognitive and the psychodynamic unconscious. Epstein indulged in a speculative synthesis between the growing body of evidence that irrational processes influence a substantial number of normal human behaviors on the one hand and psychoanalytic theory on the other. This approach appears to be misguided, at best resting on a misunderstanding of the literature on cognitive psychology and at worst prolonging psychology's dependence on unfalsifiable hypotheses to account for the apparent complexity of human behavior.
